A genuinely dystopian email sent by Xbox chief Phil Spencer in mid-2020 reveals that the company was eyeing up Warner Bros Interactive in addition to Bethesda as a potential acquisition. Even more concerningly, the executive talks about buying out Nintendo as a “career moment” and “good for both companies” – and there are even suggestions the Redmond firm may have also been interested in Valve as well.
The flagrant casualness of the unprecedented corporate consolidation is startling to read, as Spencer cautions “hostile action” in attempting to acquire Nintendo would be a bad move, but that it’s “playing the long game”. He added: “It’s taking a long time [for Nintendo] to see that their future exists off their own hardware. A long time…” He even added a smiling emoji at the end of the exchange, just to make it seem all the more sinister.
There had been rumours that Microsoft was looking to acquire Warner Bros Interactive at one point, and Spencer says that the company would have been “gettable”. However, he does note that “we wouldn’t own any of the IP which hurts long-term flexibility”. Most of the developers under Warner Bros Interactive’s umbrella work on franchises like Batman, Harry Potter, and so on – thus the studios alone don’t hold much value without the associated brands.
While the email is over three years old now, it gives a frightening insight into Microsoft’s blasé attitude to acquisitions, and its overall aims and objectives. While its eventual shift to snap up Activision Blizzard may have altered its plans, we can infer a lot about the Redmond firm’s mindset from this leaked exchange – it seems it will not stop until its gobbled up as much of the industry as possible, and it even sees juggernauts like Nintendo as eventual targets.
Sobering stuff…

Just shows how delusional and disconnected from reality Phil Spencer and Xbox really are
Who the hell do they not want to buy out?
Scum. That’s all you can say.
I have very little nice to say about Nintendo but I can't imagine a world without it. Crazy to think of them as another arm of MS. Could still happen if we're being real. No company is safe apparently.
Sobering is about the size of it.
MS really don't like creating their own talented teams to produce content. They're the worst.
Nintendo: Launches some of the most sold games of all time on Switch like MK8DX, AC:NH, SSBU, BotW, SMO, Pokemon SwSh etc
Phil: "Nintendos future exists off of their own hardware"
This is scary and why these government bodies need to double down on Microsoft as its plain to see now that their aim is to monopolise the gaming market.
I don't care what anyone says, Microsoft are a bigger threat to the gaming industry than Tencent and the Saudi's. And Phil Spencer is now a bigger scumbag than I originally thought.
Yeah, that's never happening. For so many reasons.
I dislike this company so much.
@mariomaster96 Phil like microsoft is a Parasite.
MS just wants to ruin gaming for everyone I guess..
Where was this few months back when Activision Blizzard merger should have been stopped?
@UltimateOtaku91 Any new news on the uk cma with xbox?
Good grief MS why not just use your significant assets to make games rather than buy them?!?
@GeeEssEff They don't know how to anymore and are not willing to spend the time to do so. You only need to look at halo infinite to see that. fable is going to fail just like halo infinite.
Also Phil is delusional, Nintendo games are selling like crazy, their first party games are selling more copies than the biggest multiplatform releases. So how is Nintendo going to do better by being on another system, a system that's dead in Japan and in Asia as a whole, and has been third every single gen.
Great logic Phil 🤣
@XenonKnight I don't think there's been anymore updates, it's gone pretty quiet. Probably still working out the size of the cheque.
@x3King84 Good question. The Sony fanbase seems to be oddly obsessed with Microsoft, you hear more about what they're doing around here than on actual Xbox sites lol.
If MS bought Nintendo I'd pretty be done in mainstream gaming. Indies and retro would be my menu henceforth.
And People Say Sony is the Arrogant One.
There is no way Nintendo would sell, the most frustrating thing about them is they don't buy their own companies often enough. How Nintendo passed on Atlus I'll never know, I'm glad they did but I certainly don't understand it.
Also Nintendo for what they are are insanely profitable, to buy them out would be incredibly expensive. Like easily most expensive buyout ever expensive, definitely $100B+. While the Wii U was a dismal failure it is worth noting just how much success surrounded that single failure. The GBA, DS, Wii, 3DS and now the Switch were/are all massive successes and due to being underpowered they were/are very profitable. Also Nintendo games never go on discount and yet some of them selling 10's of millions. Nintendo have even managed to get away with their own online service that those same amount of millions probably pay for despite all the shortcomings of the service.
I cannot imagine Nintendo ever being bought out. If the Switch had also flopped then maybe but considering the opposite happened and it's on course to rival the DS and PS2 I think we can safely say that a MS buyout of Nintendo is not on the cards.
Buying Nintendo? Are we back in the last century, specifically the year 1999?
Microsoft: "We don't want to monopolize the gaming industry".
Also Microsoft:
Wild that Phil Spencer thinks that Microsoft buying Nintendo would be a good move for both companies, considering Microsoft has had twenty years and almost unlimited funds and still contributed basically nothing to gaming except an ethernet port, and Nintendo is Nintendo.
Microsoft already tried to buy Nintendo in the original XBox era and "was laughed out of the room, says Kevin Bachus, a director for third-party relations on the Xbox project. “They just laughed their asses off,” Bachus said to Bloomberg. “Like, imagine an hour of somebody just laughing at you. That was kind of how that meeting went.”
With a Nintendo post-Switch and post-Super Mario Movie, the laughter should last at least two hours.
Microsoft do nothing for their XBOX.
Their XBOX just getting worse and worse, not worthy to buy.
Microsoft want their XBOX product printing money by doing absolutely nothing.
They are too cool to create kids franchises for their XBOX.
So not to be a party pooper but I clicked the source link and read that entire document that is linked in the article and I don’t see this email or dialog anywhere. Did they link the wrong file?
Somehow I sense Wario is behind this
It's also hypocritical as its xbox who should need to be on another systems hardware given their poor sales and bing third every gen, it's xbox who have had to turn to PC and mobile via cloud because they wouldn't survive just by releasing games on their own hardware 🤣.
What an absolute tool.
I rather have sega as rival to sony rather than microsoft, at least sega will compete with games rather than acquisition. Too bad the sega of japan f up so much that they have to abandon console market 😕
Ironically if anyone is putting themselves in a position where their future exists off their own hardware, it's Xbox. Nintendo are doing just fine the way they are.
One has to wonder how these comments would look if sony were the ones with deep pockets - my guess, very different indeed 🙂
I don't see the email when I click the link
@x3King84 To create hate speech.
This has absolutely nothing to do with Sony. But you know, clicks pay the bills.
It sounds implausible considering how successful Nintendo has been but then again Activision is the publisher of COD and look where that went. Companies change with the times and while I don't see the current leadership selling out any time soon there's always the chance future leaders of Nintendo will.
@Friendly ah yes because Microsoft buying the biggest third party publishers and gaming companies around has nothing to do with Sony, Microsofts competition.......
@x3King84 what other reasons. To inform people about news in relation to the gaming world as a whole.
That is just delusional, why would Nintendo want to leave their own thriving hardware, just to be limited to a tiny console market share? Nintendo could easily go to PC by themselves if needed as Xbox are far from the dominant factor there either, with Valve making a mockery of how poor the Xbox app is
Spencer is a devil with a baby's face. Everyone knows that
Really not a surprise this - and we already saw Microsoft's dossier of acquisition targets.
I wont be entirely one sided here. Lets not be naive and assume Sony doesn't have similar discussions and motivations. However i reckon a company like WB would have been much more attractive to Sony who tend to look for talent rather than ip in their acquisition strategy.
But people really need to start seeing through Phil Spencer. He is just another salesman who cares naught for anyone but his shareholders. Microsoft is an incredibly arrogant company who is completely out of touch with reality.
Nintendo have absolutely no need to sell out to anyone - and it would have to take a catastrophe of wii u standards 2 or 3 generations over to make them even consider it. I expect the play microsoft is now trying to push for will be launching a curated version of gamepass on Switch 2 to get that foothold into Japan - if Nintendo allow it. They have been cosying up for a while now.
I also dont see why valve would sell to Microsoft. Gabe may love the big M but a partnership- particularly if VR ever takes off, seems like a much more sensible proposition.
This whole thing is so exhausting now. I don't want to have to worry if my favourite 3rd party franchises like Final Fantasy, Persona, Yakuza, Tomb Raider etc are going to get released on my platform of choice. Its tiring
Microsoft is just the short term for Evil Corporation that only want power and money. Like everything Microsoft touches end up bad for consumers, that's always been the case, and i fear gaming will be next if they are not stopped in time.
That’s not sad and delusional at all 🙃
Microsoft Xbox failed to make the leap from hardware maker and publisher to game developer that Sony PlayStation pulled off through the years creating many recognizable and influential games.
Can we have Sega back and forget about these rich kids with no talent?
Buying Nintendo would be 'good for both companies?'. Phil Spencer is completely delusional no wonder you think you're 'saving the industry' and can't see your own double standards and BS.
Nintendo are doing better than both Xbox and PlayStation. The Switch is a huge runaway success and Nintendo IP's sell like hot cakes especially in Japan. I bet thats why he wants them, to corner Japan from Sony once and for all along with buying all the third parties. When will people open their eyes to Phil 'The Gamer' Spencer's true intentions?
Not that Nintendo would ever sell, that's laughable. How did he think that would go?
I've said it before but the digital future, streaming and cloud gaming will mean that all publishers, platform holders etc. will be hardware agnostic at some point.
Nintendo, Sony, Konami, Capcom and everyone else will simply be an app you subscribe to in the same way that Disney+ and Netflix exist now.
It was already something dismissed by their lawyers as a "joke" during the FTC Trial, but wherein in email exchanges about "spending Sony out of the market",was subsequently shown to be no idle threat with the ABK takeover being a mere part of a wider shopping list.
Unfortunately the lack of not breaking up Microsoft during the 90's browser wars, (wherein they propped up an ailing Apple from bankruptcy & paved the way for Steve Jobs return),led to the megacorps of it,Apple,Amazon,Facebook etc. of today.
Microsoft has demonstrated its influence with US Congress & the likes of the EU regulators & its online PR Campaigns during the trials portraying it as the "little" multi trillion dollar indie when the reality is it has major fingers in the Azure Market & cloud services & is increasingly pushing for the same Microsoft account across gaming & Windows,Office,& other services.
The acolytes will keep cheering "gamer" Phil, but the reality is Megacorps buying up all the third party AAA studios are not your friends.
Just breaking online is apparently their next-gen console plans & cloud integration is very much in their pipeline.
Americaaaa, f**k yeahhh! Whatcha' gonna do when we come for you now
This is the least 'PlayStation' news I've seen yet 😬
Of course I like a good Xbox put down, especially when it concerns their lack of creativity and their dark urge to just buy or murder every successful entity because it's the only way Microsoft has ever known how to succeed themselves.
But come on 😅
@UltimateOtaku91 Nothing has happened, nothing will happen. Just an email with some ideas, nothing more.
Microsoft tried to buy Nintendo back in the 00's. Sony also did last millenium (practically) since they wanted to receive all profit the platform would make on the Nintendo and Sony Playstation and therefore own the business Nintendo had built with their ip.
All are scummy. Sony not less than Microsoft.
Business as usual.
Phil Spencer is an absolute slimeball.
So basically Phil has visions of having a total monopoly over PC and Console global gaming market. Kinda why I sided with the CMA and its stance against the ActiBliz buy out. But I do not think they will ever be allowed to buy Nintendo unless they force the share holders to sell and likewise with Valve, but this does give a glimpse of the monopolistic mindset they have. They seriously need to just invest those billions into their current studios, and make some damn games.
@Friendly slightly more balanced view, Phil isn't trying to buy everyone it was literally a list of companies being considered.
Never understood this blind support for multi national companies, support consumers not businesses!
@elpardo1984 And the best way to support consumers is to block mergers, as they do nothing other then to reduce competition, impact innovation, and only line the pockets of share holders and executives more whilst losing talent from the industry as inevitably people are laid off after a merger.
Only seems to be the diehard sony fans that have an issue with this. Have a look on nintendo life and pure xbox and there's a real synergy between the 2 sets of fans, particularly on nintendo life, with the majority seeing having both consoles as the ideal setup. Very few seem to feel that way about playstation though...
@__jamiie which is why i felt yesterday's drama about Elder Scrolls 6 was massively overblown. By the time that's done i'd be amazed if game pass was not accessible somewhere in everyone's home if they truly want to play it
Tbf I can see it work. Nintendo has brilliant games but terrible hardware and Xbox has great hardware and terrible games.
Getting Nintendo games on Xbox would be like a wet dream 🤤
First they wanted to "outspend Sony" and now we see they wanted to "buy Nintendo" as well? How many more of these sleezy emails are out there that we don't know about?? 🤣
I can't remember a time when I didn't love Nintendo. I'd hate to see anyone buy them out unless it was to save them after some kind of unforeseen disaster.
What I'm getting from this though is that Spencer would obviously love to buy Nintendo, but the email reads like a pipe dream.
Sony probably thought about it too. They all do.
@Friendly hate speech 😂❄️😂❄️😂
Phil the shill.
@get2sammyb @x3King84
My thoughts exactly. If Push Square is going to continue to publish this sort of article, maybe they shouldn't try and pass it off as "news"? Any news outlet worth a damn is supposed to be impartial and unbiased, not spout opinion and stoke fanboyish rallying for or against a specific company. Poor show, Push Square.
Edit: I'll just add, before anyone accuses me of anything, that Pure Xbox is just as bad, but in the opposite direction. Over there, they're simping over Phil Spencer and Xbox can do no wrong and everything Microsoft does is "fantastic for the industry".
OK, so I guess I have a very different takeaway than everyone else. This isn't especially shocking to read or even "sobering" as the writer puts it. Microsoft is a huge corporation that is used to dominating its marketplace and becoming a monopoly (Windows). But let's look at it this way, who wouldn't want to buy Nintendo? I can tell you Sony would love to buy them too.
When Phil is saying that Nintendo is not seeing that their future isn't on their own hardware he is imagining a world where people are not complaining that the Switch launched with specs that were horribly outdated - look at Mortal Kombat 1 on Switch.
I've seen comments that Nintendo doesn't need Microsoft since their games sell insanely well, and sure, but that is not the point. The point is if Smash Bros. was on Series S/X would it not still sell 30m copies? Maybe not because of Game Pass, but it would still be a juggernaut that would put Xbox's in homes, including Japanese ones. Maybe it would also have a robust online component!
Phil sees a future where Nintendo is no longer hamstrung by "inferior" hardware. Imagine a world where Nintendo didn't have to worry about dated specs? Even the gaming community buys into this! How many articles are there complaining about their specs and how it's so challenging for 3rd parties. Nintendo doesn't need better specs or even want them. By not clawing at realistic graphics they save themselves millions of dollars and years of development time. This allows them to continue a stream of high quality first and second party games. Cheaper and quicker games equals more profit, especially with their stinginess with sales.
Nintendo was very wise with the Wii to veer left when Sony and Microsoft continued on their path. But both of the latter will always covet them. If either of them succeeded the other would be toast.
I support console manufacturers buying other devs/publishers to help them compete or fill a gap in their portfolio. But I would draw the line here. Console manufacturers should not be allowed to purchase each other, and i doubt they would be allowed to by regulators, as it would be very bad for the industry. We need all 3 console manufacturers to be strong in the market. Competition is kind. Lucky this seems like just a nothing corporate email, and not something that will be happening in the near future, so that's a little reassuring
I have wondered if and when the ABK acquisition goes through, is that a signal to Microsoft and the rest of the industry that everything else is fair game? If the regulatory bodies won’t stop the acquisition of the largest publisher in the industry, then would they halt anything else, based on that precedent?
Get over to pure xbox and have a read at the massive leak regarding the new controller, bethesda games line up and diskless series x that looks like an alexa device
https://www.purexbox.com/news/2023/09/biggest-leak-in-xbox-history-reveals-new-console-plans-upcoming-games-and-more
if Valve were acquired by Microsoft then I would quit gaming for life
I have no connection to Nintendo, its characters and its franchises at all. That said imagine Zelda made by Nintendo in modern and not dated hardware available day one in Game Pass... How many would subs it would get!
On a more serious note though, wouldn't Valve make more sense if Microsoft would buy another company? Imagine the stores merging and buying a game once and be able to play on PC, Xbox or Steam Deck without any hustle. Microsoft store is not as bad as it was since Game Pass was introduced and it offers cross buy with Xbox but imagine cross buy with Steam as well. Even now the stores don't compete that much, most of the time they have the same discounts...
Well Microsoft did in the past buy Rare and all of its Nintendo assets then chucked them away after, it was a horrible sight to see valuable franchises die from the cause of greed
It terrible!! Microsoft could buy up everyone, make all game exclusive. Yet Xbox still not have the best games!! They so determined to be number 1, they know it not possible compete with Playstation for tallent so they just buy other devs creations!! Xbox fans slate Playstation for timed exclusive, even tho Xbox had timed exclusive wen they could. But it ok for Microsoft simply monopolise market because they richest!!
@Pimpernel I will never forgive them for buying Bethesda and taking that away from the playstation ecosystem, it was out of spite and was one of the worst decisions Bethesda has ever made, like a narcissist they relentlessly just keep on going and plowing right through
@belmont Valve being independent from Microsoft is the one thing keeping MS from having a complete monopoly on PC gaming and also gives people an out from even needing Windows at all with Proton.
@HwuaiLiang There was a clause in the collaboration of the Playstation which stated that all game profits would go to Sony.
Technically not owning, but practically do owning Nintendo and their output.
https://www.reddit.com/r/nintendo/comments/8oqj8n/nintendo_and_sony_was_there_anything_that_could/
I have hated Microsoft ever since they tried to kill Netscape Communicator. The company has been an anti-competitive bully since the 90s. They have been poisoning the gaming industry ever since they entered it. Now they are going for the kill by buying up publishers like Bethesda/Activision and even looking to buy the legendary Nintendo. All just to kill Playstation and establish a monopoly in the gaming industry and leaving gamers no other choice to play the games they want.
@HwuaiLiang it’s a worse deal for the company than being bought which lets you share in the combined profits.
@Pimpernel
Microsoft is like the Majin Buu from Dragon Ball Z of the gaming world. They are absorbing every other competent fighter (company) just to beat Super Saiyan Goku (Playstation). However, they fail to realize that Majin Buu lost even after absorbing every other good fighter (company). The difference in power (quality) was just so big between them. Just look at the quality of games released by studious bought by MS.
@RudeAnimat0r I'm sure Sony would love to acquire Nintendo as well, but financially it's basically unviable so the point becomes irrelevant. They wouldn't even consider it. MS, on the other hand, could easily afford it, that's what makes it so much scarier.
Nintendo need complete freedom and independence to take whatever risks and gambles they want, that's essential to their identity and their capacity for innovation. Take that away and it's just not the same company anymore. It's not as simple as "Tears of the Kingdom on Series X!!!" The question becomes, would that game even have existed?
@ArcticSin I was speaking what hypothetically would be good for Microsoft, not what would be good for PC gaming! I am not very familiar with PC gaming anyway; I only have a Steam Deck and even though I work in both Linux and Windows I very much prefer Windows. Seems that the stores on PC don't really compete though.
That said Proton is very good as an alternative but there are arguments in both sides. Windows 11 work good in the Steam Deck if you have a fast SSD, albeit a bit slow. You get more compatibility but loose some stuff from Steam OS like changing TDP in the fly etc.
Phil’s job as CEO of Microsoft Gaming isn’t just to run Xbox… I doubt his day to day has much to do with Xbox anymore. But his primary purpose as a CEO is to look at ways to further increase Microsoft presence in gaming which mean potential acquisitions. I’m sure Phil would be fired if he doesn’t make a list like this every once in a while. That all these large companies are designed to do. Sony wasn’t just happy with just having Aniplex… They needed Crunchy Roll and Funimation as well. I mean… Sony just purchased Audeze while already having a perfect good in house audio team.
These emails aren’t at all remotely shocking.
@S1ayeR74 I dont entirely agree, I dont entirely disagree either. It was more making the point that their is a certain amount of blindness to Sony's shady practices and now it's MS flexing their larger financial muscle its a problem.
Go over NL. Boys and Girls over there are spitting feathers over this!!!
The "good move for both companies" made me LOL. It would only be amazing for themselves. If Sony and Nintendo was to go out of business tomorrow it would be an unbearable loss to gaming. If Xbox was to go out of business then nothing of value would be lost that we wouldn't get anyway.
Wow, the obvious that they couldn’t see I’m the Activision merger. The complete failure of protecting basic consumer interest form the government is just astounding. I hope the UK does not back down. And then Canada said it was a bad idea, but we just didn’t work enough to meet the deadline.
MS will kill gaming if it buys too much of it. I really think the industry will just shrink if they get too much power. They don’t know how to manage their gaming branches, and that’s why acquisitions and throwing money have become their entire strategy
The link in the article appears to take one to an extract of a deposition of Phil Spencer, rather than the email. There's no discussion of WB or Nintendo in that extract.
When you have too much money and power and you don't get told "no" nearly often enough, you start thinking you can get away with anything. Pair that with Microsoft's only business strategy of buying their way to dominance and you get the current situation of Microsoft buying up everything they can to make you buy the least popular console most people don't want. Until that changes, they'll keep damaging the industry by buying publishers. They are the feisty, mistreated underdogs, after all!
I guess they forgot about the time nintendo paid for them to get on a plane, meet them at Nintendo in Japan, and LAUGHED them out of the room. Anyone?
Funny how people say xbox isn’t anticompetitive and not trying to monopolize. Literally trying to buy two of the 3 other platforms outright. I refuse to support their products
We are crap so let's buy them all mentality
Remember, people.
"CoMpEtiTiOn iS gOoD fOr tHe iNduStRy"
"If we can't beat them, buy them" - Phil "we're the underdog" Spencer
Warner Bros. Games purchase is literally useless since majority of teams are working on licensed games. So you would need to pay billions for teams and then millions for licenses.
Microsoft is a cancer. They can't leave the market one day too soon.
No thanks Microsoft with you're digital only mindset, I thought buying a couple shops/studios was ok but not the whole damn industry.
@HwuaiLiang good statement to someone who owns a ps1, ps2, ps3, ps4 pro, switch and xbox series x. Apparently i’m not allowed to be here or something or voice my concern for what Sony is becoming.
@HwuaiLiang puzzled me too that has. Maybe phone don't do it and needs laptop or PC for it, but phone should be able to do it also? I dunno
I mean this email is several years old but I still gotta wonder if MS is going to reconsider their subscription model at all or going to keep throwing stuff at it?
With Disney losing millions on Disney +, the subscription scramble seems to showing its limitations. The only way I can see that MS can make it work long time is by being the main content producer, hence all these acquisitions. However they are probably hitting their limits now with the Activision Blizzard purchase bfore monopoly rules will catch up with them
It's difficult for me to tell the difference between Phil Spencer and some of the xbox fanboys on twitter other than he's the ceo of Xbox😂. Them documents are glorious.
It once again shows you that you don't have to be a genius to get to his position.
If they are ever aloud to buy someone like Nintendo I'd just quit gaming.
Push is really stoking the console wars with these articles in the last day.
Not surprising at all from a Microsoft exec, but still horrible to read. I hate Phil's "nice guy" persona, and how much it's worked. Seeing many people react to this saying things like "I like Phil but this makes me think a bit less of him"
He is NOT your gaming buddy, guy!
In that email Phil also let slip that the problem with recent acquisitions (at the time) was that it was “too core, not broad, not mobile”.
Everything about MS just makes my skin crawl as this whole thing develops.
He even said that it’s hard to buy Ninty because their Board of Directors don’t push for constant growth, but that he has a contact that is buying up Ninty shares and he views it as an opportunity that this might change.
They will never buy Nintendo. I read few years back on here or another site that nintendo has a huge amount of money set aside incase of an attempted buy out
@Nei Extremely depressing that the industry basically swapped Sega for Microsoft.
@HwuaiLiang a fact cannot be incorrect. So make up your mind.
@Deljo I'm not getting that impression from either article on the sister sites, there's a few who say they'd like to see a merger, but most, even on Pure Xbox aren't positive about the email.
Lies of Phil is a really scary game. I don't think I have the courage to play it.
The only thing Phil cares about is money. I can't believe that clown actually thought he could buy Nintendo lol.
I never liked him and all of these emails and stuff is just proving my dislike. He always seemed so two-faced.
@HwuaiLiang ah yeah, the slang has changed after Trump. I forgot about that. I stand corrected.
I also edited my initial post. Happy now?
Good day
@JayJ If you read these things how blind can you be to see that MS is a disease to the world. These companies exist for one reason and thats to buy out the competition.
Wow after all the flack about how Xbox is bad for the industry and all it took was phil to sober some people up.
@naruball I know thats why MS buys all the competition to destroy the industry. People are scared about Tencent i tend to believe that MS looks like a bigger disease to the industry.
Xbots still going to try and claim MS is not trying to build a monopoly? They need to be stopped.
Phil isn't wrong though about Nintendo taking a long time to realize their future exists off Nintendo hardware. They are the only one that hasn't reached the conclusion that PC ports are a great idea that cause no harm to their existing hardware.
We will likely see full game ports from Sony and Xbox on mobile very soon, not the mobile shovelware model applied to their IP like Nintendo tried and failed at.
"Absolute power corrupts absolutely"
This is exactly why I hate Microsoft/ Xbox. As much as I don't like the direction Sony is taking playstation it's things like this that are why I will never support them.
My Series X is literally boxed up, waiting for me to package it in a brown box, weigh it for postage costs and put it on eBay, because I am sick of the forced ads on it and Starfield is just meh. Reading the news of a digital only online required only future with the brand just cements my decision. Think I’ll go PS5 and Nintendos next console. Quality gaming.
But also reading about the fact they seriously considered buying Nintendo do is frightening, it would destroy Ninty and cause irreparable damage to the entire games market and the consumers would lose out big time, hey but at least it would be a ‘career moment’ for Spencer right? Microsoft hasn’t changed at all, even with new leadership they are still as monopolistic as ever in their mindset.
I don’t see MS getting Nintendo unless something crazy happens…but that’s just me. Also don’t think MS is happy all their dirty laundry is being aired.
@elpardo1984 What have Sony done? Paid for exclusivity, that’s all, they may have bought some studios but not many, and I think Bungie was their biggest purchase! And that was solely on the agreement all their games can be multiplat. There has been nothing stopping MS from out bidding Sony on exclusivity deals, nothing! And yet they year after year after the 360 just never bothered, and now to catch up they are just buying the biggest studios in the business with the biggest games titles, and if they weren’t forced to they would make them all exclusive too.
So whilst I agree Sony may have performed some questionable acts in the last, paying for exclusivity is a long way from buying the entire studio making the game! And a HELL of a lot more expensive. One way takes some games from other platforms, the other takes ALL games from other platforms.
Damn Spencer and Microsoft, continues to sicken people as usual with this crap, ugh...
This whole ordeal is also one of the reasons why I'm so pessimistic towards most acquisitions nowadays.
Spend Sony out of business and buy Valve and Nintendo, but remember guys they aren't trying to become a monopoly.
Personally I would like to think Nintendo would rather close its doors than sell out to these parasites. Microsoft is like a cancer in the gaming industry which needs cutting out.
Well, Unity is probably happy this happened since it's at least temporarily taken the spotlight off them.
@UltimateOtaku91 well said
Mario and Zelda on my Xbox would be good
@Flaming_Kaiser Exactly. Far worse. At the end of the day, if another company buys a Publisher/studio, I can still play their new games on a ps console. If they're bought by MS, I won't have access to them. So as a consumer, I lose. Competition is not always good, especially when your competitor is MS.
As funny as the thumbnail for this article is, it kind of implies Xbox have beaten Nintendo in some way, which couldn't be further from the truth lol
@OneWingedAngel i agree. Xbox is great machine, i have Series X an my kids Series S but Playstation is number 1 for one reason. The games!! Playstation exclusive widely regarded as best games. Xbox game, even the good ones, don’t come close. Rarely is 3rd party as good as PS exclusive too. Odd ones like Red Dead 2, GTA 6 maybe.
I would literally leave gaming as a pastime if MS bought Nintendo.
Mr spencer it may be good for MS but it would be horrendous for Nintendo to be under your umbrella.
Good gaming franchise are made with blood sweat and tears they don't want to earn it. Like every one else has had too Nintendo and Sony has put effort into creating new and fresh ips that have had a major impact on gaming. Microsoft is wanting to buy up major studios that's been successful so they don't have to do the work because their unoriginal. This is captilism at its worst in America. This is why to much wealth for a corporation is a bad thing. If you hate it so much do somthing about it come election day.
Businessmen who care nothing about console gaming heritage. MS wants to barge in, buy up companies who renowned and be the big boss and watch the money roll in. They're a danger to future of console gaming.
What have Rare done since MS bought them? Nothing worth talking about, that's what. Every company they buy, will become a sleeper.
